Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about VoiceCommand.

What is VoiceCommand?
VoiceCommand is a desktop application for fast voice transcription and spoken commands. Click into any textbox, press the transcription hotkeys, and speak. Your dictation appears instantly in the textbox. You can also select text anywhere on your screen to transform it using Command Mode (for example, “Make this sound more professional” or “Summarize this as bullet points.”).
What is Command Mode?
Command Mode lets you select any text on your screen and transform it with a spoken instruction. Ask it to rewrite, summarize, or explain the text (“Explain this like I’m five” or “Who said this quote?”) and VoiceCommand handles the rest.
What does “Bring Your Own Key” mean?
VoiceCommand supports OpenAI and Lemonfox.ai for cloud-based transcription and transformations. You create an account with your preferred provider, generate an API key, and paste it into VoiceCommand. Our API setup guide walks you through the process.
Does Command Mode work without an internet connection?
Not yet. Command Mode relies on high-quality cloud LLMs to deliver accurate transformations and answers. Local LLMs are perfect for transcription today, but they still lag behind for complex text work—so Command Mode currently requires an internet connection and an API key for OpenAI or Lemonfox.ai.
Why do I need an API key for Command Mode?
Command Mode runs your requests through the provider you choose. That usage is billed directly by OpenAI or Lemonfox.ai, so they require your personal API key. VoiceCommand simply routes the request; we do not charge usage fees or store your key.
Is VoiceCommand affiliated with OpenAI or Lemonfox.ai?
No. VoiceCommand is not associated with OpenAI or Lemonfox.ai in any way. We chose these API providers because they offer cost-effective, high-quality services for both transcription and text transformation. VoiceCommand is an independent application that integrates with these providers to give you the best possible experience.
Will local LLMs work on my computer?
If you have an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer) or an NVIDIA GPU with CUDA support, your machine is fast enough for local whisper transcription. You can confirm CUDA-capable NVIDIA cards through NVIDIA’s current GPU list and their legacy GPU guide.
Is VoiceCommand really free to use?
Yes. VoiceCommand is free now and will stay free—including future updates. If you want to support development, you can donate any amount via our donation page.
How much do cloud providers cost for transcription or Command Mode?
OpenAI and Lemonfox.ai bill usage based on the models you choose for transcription or Command Mode. Check our API pricing and setup guide for current rates and recommendations.
Why isn’t my microphone or transcription working?

Confirm VoiceCommand has microphone access in your operating system’s privacy settings.

Test the microphone in another app or the system mic check to make sure the hardware is working.

Significant background noise can cause missed words. Try a quieter environment or a higher-quality microphone.

How do I report issues or request features?
Drop us a line at support@voicecommand.app with any bugs, questions, or feature ideas.
What languages does VoiceCommand support?

VoiceCommand uses OpenAI’s Whisper models, which currently cover 100 languages:

English, Chinese, German, Spanish, Russian, Korean, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Turkish, Polish, Catalan, Dutch, Arabic, Swedish, Italian, Indonesian, Hindi, Finnish, Vietnamese, Hebrew, Ukrainian, Greek, Malay, Czech, Romanian, Danish, Hungarian, Tamil, Norwegian, Thai, Urdu, Croatian, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Latin, Maori, Malayalam, Welsh, Slovak, Telugu, Persian, Latvian, Bengali, Serbian, Azerbaijani, Slovenian, Kannada, Estonian, Macedonian, Breton, Basque, Icelandic, Armenian, Nepali, Mongolian, Bosnian, Kazakh, Albanian, Swahili, Galician, Marathi, Punjabi, Sinhala, Khmer, Shona, Yoruba, Somali, Afrikaans, Occitan, Georgian, Belarusian, Tajik, Sindhi, Gujarati, Amharic, Yiddish, Lao, Uzbek, Faroese, Haitian Creole, Pashto, Turkmen, Nynorsk, Maltese, Sanskrit, Luxembourgish, Myanmar, Tibetan, Tagalog, Malagasy, Assamese, Tatar, Hawaiian, Lingala, Hausa, Bashkir, Javanese, Sundanese, Cantonese.

Can I sync settings across devices?
Not right now. All settings and history stay on the local machine, and cross-device sync isn’t supported yet.
How accurate is the transcription?
Accuracy depends on language, accent, and audio quality. Review Whisper’s published Word Error Rates to gauge performance across languages: github.com/openai/whisper.
Can VoiceCommand run offline?
Yes—after downloading the Whisper models for local transcription, VoiceCommand runs fully offline. Cloud transcription and Command Mode still require an internet connection.
How do I change the transcription or command hotkeys?
Open the preferences and visit the “Transcription Mode” or “Command Mode” sections. Each submenu includes a dedicated hotkey area where you can update the shortcuts to match your workflow.
What permissions does VoiceCommand need on macOS?

VoiceCommand requires three permissions on macOS to function properly:

  • Microphone access: Required to allow voice recording for transcription.
  • Accessibility settings: Enabled to allow recognizing hotkeys system-wide so it works in any app.
  • Automation → System Events: Required to enable pasting of transcriptions and copying of text for Command Mode in any app.

VoiceCommand will automatically request these permissions when you first launch the app. If the automatic flow doesn't work, see the troubleshooting FAQ below for manual setup instructions.

What should I do if VoiceCommand doesn't work as expected on macOS?

If VoiceCommand isn't working as expected on macOS, it's likely due to missing permissions. If the automatic permission request during app startup didn't work, you can manually grant the required permissions:

  1. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
  2. Navigate to Privacy & Security (or Security & Privacy).
  3. Add VoiceCommand to the following sections and enable the toggles:
    • Microphone: Find VoiceCommand in the list and enable the toggle.
    • Accessibility: Find VoiceCommand in the list and enable the toggle.
    • Automation: Find VoiceCommand, then enable the toggle for System Events.
  4. Restart VoiceCommand after granting all permissions.

Once all three permissions are enabled, VoiceCommand should work correctly. If issues persist after granting permissions, please contact support at support@voicecommand.app.

Does VoiceCommand store or send my audio or text anywhere?

By default, VoiceCommand keeps recordings, transcripts, and command history only on your device. You can limit the number of saved entries in the “Message History” section of General preferences, clear everything via General → Data & Privacy, or remove individual items from the Recent Activity board.

When you choose a cloud provider for transcription or Command Mode, the relevant audio or selected text is sent to that provider so they can process the request. We recommend reviewing their privacy policies before enabling online modes.

Can I keep local and cloud providers configured at the same time?
Absolutely. You can save API keys for cloud providers while still selecting a local LLM for transcription, or vice versa. Switch the active provider at any time without losing your saved credentials.
What happens if my API credits run out or the provider is down?
If your hardware supports it, you can switch transcription back to a local LLM and keep working. Command Mode relies on cloud models, so it pauses until the provider recovers or you top up your API balance.
Is there Windows or Linux support?
VoiceCommand runs on macOS and Windows today. Linux support isn’t available yet, but let us know if you’d like to join future beta testing.
How do updates work?
VoiceCommand checks for new releases and lets you know in-app when an update is available. Install the update when it suits you—your preferences stay intact.

About

Why we built VoiceCommand and what makes it different.

Our Mission

Voice transcription has evolved dramatically over the past years. We've moved from slow, error-prone systems to real-time, immediate transcription. Today, you can use your voice to type while maintaining your workflow—no waiting, no interruptions.

We tested paid voice transcription apps, and while they're good, current technology means you don't need to pay $10 per month or more for quality voice transcription. With a modern computer, you can run full transcription power locally without ever sending data across the internet. This is why we started building VoiceCommand.

Then we came up with Command Mode. In professional settings, your spoken words often aren't the ones you'd use in a professional email or abstract. You need to modify and refine them, and you often want to summarize long messages or abstracts from colleagues. This is why we built Command Mode. Since local LLMs aren't powerful enough for proper text transformations yet, we use cloud providers for this feature.

Core Values

We built VoiceCommand primarily for ourselves, but when we saw its potential for other users, we decided to offer it free. Voice transcription isn't magic, and you don't need to be a big company to develop it—it should be free for everyone to use with good quality.

Our philosophy is simple: You don't have to make money from every bit of work you do. If you can offer something to the public for free, why not do it and keep having fun with your hobby project?

What Makes VoiceCommand Different

VoiceCommand is free while still being reliable and offering high-quality voice transcription. We also offer Command Mode, which not many other transcription apps provide.

Even if you use Command Mode or cloud APIs for voice transcription, it still doesn't cost much for daily use—at most $5 per month even if you speak 30 hours per month.
